Hurricane Katrina Response

From Jennifer Coggins, conference director of humanitarian services: Because you gave your hearts so generously to the people of the Gulf Coast, you have made our conference-wide collection of UMCOR relief supplies a success!  On Sunday, Sept. 11, 45 volunteers came to First Hillsboro to help fill a 53-foot semi trailer to capacity.  Among the volunteers were two youth groups and members of the United Methodist Motorcycle Enthusiasts.  Along with a massive amount of toiletries, sheet sets, air mattresses, toys, pillows, water jugs and medical supplies, drivers from as far away as 125 miles brought more than 7,000 health kits, 255 flood buckets, 203 cases of water, and 131 blankets.

The truck arrived two days later in Franklinton, La., a small town northeast of Baton Rouge, where local churches are working together to coordinate relief efforts.  “It is reported that the parish officials cannot figure out how the churches are coordinating so much help and assistance so quickly when communications have been down. The minister at First Baptist Church in Franklinton expressed how much they appreciated and needed the supplies.”

There is concern for “hidden” hurricane evacuees staying with family and friends in our communities and may not benefit from resources provided at shelters.  If you are assisting any family, please ensure that they have registered for assistance with FEMA.  They can apply for FEMA assistance online at www.fema.gov  or by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

Many churches have expressed interest in “adopting” a family—now is your chance!  We have been notified by the staff at the Will Rogers shelter in Fort Worth about families who have been placed in homes and are now in need of furniture and other household items.  This opportunity is open to churches in all areas of the conference, although most of the families will be living in the Fort Worth area.  Please let me know as soon as possible if your congregation is interested in supporting a family as they settle into a more permanent situation.

Please continue to give generously to UMCOR and to check the Conference website, www.ctcumc.org for the latest updates on how your congregations can continue to respond to this disaster.  There are still a wide variety of opportunities to volunteer and help provide material resources to relief efforts.  Also, please let us know about your church’s response activities.

Local churches and the media

From Carolyn Stephens, associate director for Mission Ministries and director of communications: On August 29, our conference contacted all the larger community newspapers and some of the television stations in Central Texas with information about the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) as a vehicle for contributing to both immediate and long-term relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina. It was noted that UMCOR was carried along with Red Cross and the Salvation Army by most news outlets in Central Texas as an organization that applies 100% of donations to the disaster. All overhead is covered by the UMC.

Our local churches are meeting needs in many creative and generous ways. Many details are available on the conference website which will be updated again Friday. We urge you to think about sharing your story — especially when working collaboratively with other churches and community groups — with your local media. It can be as simple as a brief “media alert” giving just the basic facts and a contact person. It can be a phone call to a reporter whose interest in community involvement is evident in previous or current stories. Most media today appreciate the brief facts approach communicated by e-mail. If the story fits into their mix of news and space they will contact you. If you are approaching a television station, please be prepared to suggest something highly visual to carry the story. For a list of media outlets in Texas and how to contact them, visit http://www.usnpl.com/txnews.html and look for your community.

A note of appreciation

Rose Selenge, a refugee in resettlement with the Outreach Committee of McMillan UMC, was in need of funds for her son. Many readers of E-Link responded to the call, and Mary shares her appreciation: “Thank you my Church Family of the United Methodist Church Central Texas Conference for coming together in support of me and my children in Congo. Because of all your gifts, prayers and love, my son, Paul, now has the money to travel from Brazzaville to Camroon to complete the application process for his VISA. I hope to hear from Paul soon and will make sure to keep my church family informed of his progress. Thank you for your continued prayers. In Christ, Rose Selenge.”

Christmas Before and After: Celebrating the Journey

The days between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day can be so much richer and more meaningful if we can find ways to make the time, to celebrate the themes, to explore as individuals, families, and churches what it means for God to be born in human flesh. Dean McIntyre, director of music resources with the General Board of Discipleship, releases an article (www.gbod.org/worship/default.asp?act=reader&item_id=14618&loc_id=17,823) as the cover article for Cokesbury’s Church Music Workshop magazine Sept.-Dec. 2005 issue.  Advent consists of the four Sundays before Christmas Day, and there are nearly two more weeks after Christmas Day until Epiphany. Without minimizing the importance of Christmas Eve or morning, they offer suggestions for how we can make more significant the journey along the way and following.
