Emergency Responses to Hurricane Katrina

Response statement

The following statement was distributed electronically to all pastors in our conference. It is a little lengthy, but serves as a necessary source of information for other local church and conference leaders. Many UM congregations in the hurricane area and adjacent states are hosting displaced persons and providing other assistance. The Louisiana Conference center has been housing nearly 200 guests. Sixty of the evacuees were residents of a New Orleans nursing care facility for mentally challenged people. In addition to offering shelter and food, staff members were counseling guests.

 Dear Friends in Ministry,
Our hearts have been joined together this week in prayer for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We know that you would like to respond quickly to the needs of the people of the Gulf Coast who have been so devastated by this disaster, and we want to provide information about the best ways to provide assistance.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) will be heavily involved in the recovery of the affected areas for some time.  UMCOR staff is in contact with the bishops, disaster response coordinators and United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) coordinators in the affected conferences, and several UMCOR consultants are working with those conferences to organize their response.  An article published on the UMCOR website (www.umcor.org <http://www.umcor.org/> ) informs readers about phases of disaster response:
“UMCOR Disaster Response is a three phase process. The emergency stage is the present stage and is anticipated to last for up to 10 days. During this time rescue efforts and infrastructure repair are carried out by official agencies.

“In the second phase, the relief phase, assistance is provided to home owners who need to ‘muck out,’ assess damage, receive emotional and spiritual care, and begin their long road to recovery. During this time the local churches are very active, acting as shelters and support areas for the community.

“The third phase, long-term recovery, involves a holistic approach to people who have suffered losses, covering everything from seeking them out in their neighborhood to providing information and advocacy about their federal and state assistance rights. In coordination with other religious bodies and community service agencies, UMCOR will participate in repairing and rebuilding of homes, and assistance with living expenses.”

The Central Texas Conference Disaster Response Committee will continue to dialogue with UMCOR regarding specific needs.  At this point, the primary need is for financial contributions.  Please encourage members of your congregation to give to UMCOR's Hurricanes 2005 Global, Advance #982523.

UMCOR has also issued an urgent request for health kits, flood buckets, bottled water and blankets; please consider either assembling these imperative emergency kits or contributing financial donations for the kits (health kits--$12 each, flood buckets--$45 each, made to Material Resource Ministry, Advance #901440).  FUMC Waxahachie has graciously offered to serve as a drop-off point for the emergency kits.  If your congregation plans to assemble kits, you may bring them to the church’s Family Life Center on Sunday, September 11th from 1:00pm to 8:00pm.  Please contact the conference office if you will be sending kits for delivery or if you would like to volunteer to transport the kits to the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, LA. Please refer to the UMCOR website for details on the contents of the emergency kits.

Finally, please consider volunteer opportunities to help with recovery from Hurricane Katrina.  Within the next 4-5 days UMCOR will have more information on what the time line looks like for volunteers.  Only the trained "First Responders" will be allowed in initially.  As things unfold, food and water will be needed.  But right now there is no place to send or store in the disaster area.  Beginning in a few weeks, volunteer teams will be needed to assist with clean-up and rebuilding for years to come.  For information on what disaster sites will be scheduling volunteers, call the Volunteer Hotline at 1-800-918-3100.

Thank you for your compassion, your generosity, and your commitment to help our sisters and brothers in the Gulf Coast.  Please continue to pray for those who have lost loved ones and property in this disaster.  For more information regarding any of the opportunities to assist, contact Chuck Graff at 817-339-5065 or cgraff@fumcftw.org or Jennifer Coggins at 817-877-5222, 800-460-8622 or jennifer@ctcumc.org.  Also, please go to the CTC website for periodic updates on the situation:  www.ctcumc.org <http://www.ctcumc.org/> .

In Christ’s Service,
Chuck Graff, Conference Coordinator for Disaster Response
Jennifer Coggins, Director of Humanitarian Services

 Media Alert

In addition to communications with our church leaders, a media alert was distributed electronically on Monday to all the major newspapers and some television stations in our conference area. Although they were advised on the UMC’s resources for disaster response and how others might choose to contribute, it would be advisable for others to follow up with their local media. Pastors of the Brownwood District are taking a paid ad in the Brownwood newspaper encouraging participation with prayers and contributions. Remember that 100% of contributions to UMCOR go to disaster relief since the UMC covers all overhead.

 Resources for local churches

The General Board of Discipleship (www.gbod.org) has posted on their website several resources that local churches might use in worship. One is titled “When the Wind Blows: Worship Resources for Use After Hurricanes or Other Natural Disasters,” and others relate to the Tsunami disaster, resources for “War or Other National Crisis,” and “UMCOR Hurricane Relief.”

Christian Education Sunday

Sunday, September 4, is Christian Education Sunday in the Central Texas Conference. Traditionally, churches receive a special offering on the day for the conference’s ministries of Christian education. This year, funds from the 2004 offering were used to provide scholarships for persons to participate in FOCUS ’05, the national children’s ministry event, and eChristianEd, a certification program for persons who lead in Christian education in the local church. Your local church’s offering is an investment that is helping prepare leaders who will give back many times over through their love for God and the church. Make sure that you take a Christian Education Sunday offering some time in September and send it on a remittance form. It is listed on the form under “Special Day” offerings, Fund 403.

This listing will appear in the Sept. 9 issue of Central Link and also on the conference website.  From the conference staff, we hope to support as many of the local church events as possible, and we urge others to embrace these events as great opportunities to pick up a new treasure, enjoy some wonderful food, bid at the auctions, and participate in the numerous fun activities.
