“Cross Roads” Lent devotions program
This Lenten spiritual refection and devotion program, offered free from the Society of St. Andrew (Advance #801600), involves many stories in the Bible where people are at a crossroads in their lives. At these junctures, they must decide whether to travel in God’s direction or choose a different path. This devotional program guides readers into reflecting on their own choices as they follow Jesus’ journey toward the cross and resurrection.  Lent and Easter call us to remember the mystery of redemption in Christ and to more fully participate in his life-giving spirit. In keeping with these traditions, the Society of St. Andrew invites individuals and congregations to participate in this program of spiritual reflection, prayer and giving. Sample starter kits available at no cost or obligation for review before placing a congregational order (by Feb. 13). News

General agency publications address health & wholeness

Health and wholeness is a growing concern in the UMC and the world, encouraging the general agencies and some of their respective publications to give it special attention. In the first three months of this year, at least seven denominational publications are making space available to look at ministries of wellness. In an effort organized by Kathy Nobel, editor of Interpreter magazine, health issues will be addressed by Interpreter (UM Communications), Center Sage (Center of Aging and Older Adult Ministries, General Board of Discipleship), New World Outlook (General Board of Global Ministries), Response (UM Women), UMMen (General Commission on UM Men), and FaithLink (Cokesbury). Circuit Rider, a magazine of the UM Publishing House (which also publishes other interagency work) will address various health-related concerns such as the wellness of clergy, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and access to health care. All of these publications are available to read at the Conference Resource Center.

On the record

“When Peter Storey, former Methodist bishop in South Africa, was called to moderate a church in crisis, he would come before the church with two books. In one hand he would hold the Bible; in the other, the Methodist Book of Discipline. ‘We can solve this crisis with either of these two books,’ he would say. Usually the congregation would choose the Discipline. Each side in the dispute thought its rights would be better honored by the church’s book of laws than by Scripture’s insistence on love of enemies and preference for repentance over claims of victory.” — From Editors of The Christian Century
