Euless pastor arrested, placed on 90-day suspension Rev. James L. “Jimmy” Finley, senior pastor at First Euless UMC, has been placed on 90-day suspension following his arrest Dec. 1 on charges of public lewdness. The charges were brought by a 21-year-old man who told police that Finley had fondled him and who later made lewd advances on a recorded phone at the police station.
The suspension relieves Finley of his pastoral duties at the 1,400-member church but retains his salary and benefits. Finley was due to retired in June 2006. Bishop Ben Chamness called this a “tragic situation,” one in which “we are all concerned for the well-being of anyone who may have been harmed — the young man, the pastor, and the congregation.”
“Jesus knew that there were imperfections in His first disciples, and Jesus knew there would be imperfections in those who follow in the Way,” Bishop Chamness told the congregation in worship on Dec. 4. “Jesus offered healing and wholeness to those who would walk with Him. And He created the church because it can help us through the imperfections of life.” Mid-Cities DS Connally Dugger told the congregation, “It is my intent to see that all the resources at my disposal are made available to you during these next days and weeks so that ministry will go impeded, particularly during these special days of Advent.”
Finley met with Bishop Chamness and Rev. Dugger on Monday, Dec. 5, to determine the implications of the charges and how it would be handled in the church. The Cabinet will meet in special session Dec. 14 to determine whether an interim pastor will be assigned at this time. Rev. Dugger met in an open dialogue with about 100 church members the evening of Dec. 5, and counselors are working with church staff and the church’s youth and children’s groups on processing this painful situation.
Associate pastor Rev. Beverly J. Springer is handling day-to-day operations at the church. Rev. Charles McClure, immediate past director of the conference Council on Finance & Administration who retired in June, will preach this Sunday (Dec. 11).
UM ads run on Times Square billboard (reminder) “The Gift,” an Igniting Ministry message about how sharing our gifts with others which is now appearing on the giant NBC Astrovision billboard screen above New York City’s Times Square, is expected to reach an estimated 2 million people flowing daily through Times Square. The 30-second spots will be shown on the 30’ X 40’ screen eight times a day for a two-week period that began Nov. 14. “The Gift” and “I Believe” ads will also appear on 18 cable networks Dec. 5 through Christmas Eve.
