Near-Time Items

Do you have a story to tell?
Alan Cooperman, national religion writer for the Washington Post newspaper, is looking for compelling stories of individuals (not groups) who made sacrifices to respond to the needs of others related to Hurricane Katrina. Examples might be someone whose baby drowned last year, and responding to this disaster relief work is their way of healing; someone who quit a job to head down to Louisiana to help; three housewives/four golf buddies/etc. who spent their vacation time to volunteer at a disaster site.

If you have an appropriate story, contact Stephen Drachler, UM Communications executive director of Public Information, at 615-742—5411 (office), 615-456-4710 (cell) or sdrachler@umcom.org.

Children’s art exhibit at First Colleyville
More U.S. children live in poverty than all other age groups combined. This sobering fact called First UMC of Colleyville to designate Sunday, Oct. 16, as Children’s Sabbath and spotlight children, their contribution to our world, their hope for our future, and our hope for theirs. The church will be unveiling the first exhibit in the new Lobby Gallery of the Family Life Building, which opened one year ago with 22,000-square foot multi-purpose space.  “Ways We Care for God’s Children” features artwork by First Colleyville children against a “Handprint Mural.” The acrylic on fabric mural is comprised of handprints of the entire congregation. Also included in the exhibit is an antique print, “Jesus, The Hope of the World,” depicting Christ surrounded by children of all races.  For more information, visit www.fumccolleyville.org.

UMCOR, relief agencies respond to Asia earthquake

UMCOR and ecumenical partner agencies are responding to the Oct. 8 earthquake that shook Pakistan and India, leaving a death toll that some reports place at more than 30,000. UMCOR is sending aid to the region through its partners, the International Blue Crescent and Church World Service.  (Source: UMNS)

UMPH provides support

Some of the most heartbreaking pictures of destruction confronting UM churches after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita are water-soaked and ruined Bibles, UM hymnals and other worship resources. The board of the UM Publishing House, meeting in Nashville Oct. 3-5, voted unanimously to spend up to $500,000 to restore those lost resources.  “We will work hand in hand with the bishops and cabinets of those annual conferences most affected to plan for efficient and timely help for as long as it takes,” said Neil M Alexander, president and publisher. “Our aim is to support their work of rebuilding vital centers of worship, Christian formation, evangelism, and mission.” (Source: UMNS)
